Living by the sea is amazing. I love it and I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else, but it comes at a cost to our properties. The salty air attaches itself to everything. It is not fussy about what surface it touches and, ultimately, it will take its toll. On the garage door front, there are various different surface finishes available, but they are all on the same chassis configurations and have the same metal operating gear.

Steel doors are galvanised before being powder coated to give them the best chance of staving off the salty air. There are also the GRP finished doors that will last forever, but eventually they fade and the gear rusts away.

The best way to look after your door to give it an occasional wash with fresh water to remove salt deposits.

Garage door affected by salty airHere is a picture of a door we fitted eight years ago. I drive past it most days and have watched it slowly deteriorate due to salt deposits.

You can clearly see where the rain has helped by washing the bottom of the door, but because the owner has never cleaned it down, the top panel now has rust forming.

If this isn’t cleaned, rubbed down and painted, then it will go though the panel.

Everywhere you look along the coast you can see the top parts of doors rusting at the top because of this fact.

Rust-damaged garage doorHere is a really bad one!

The answer is simple.

Give your door a wash down every now and again and if rust appears, then treat it appropriately as it will only get worse.
