Creating a room from a garage
We are finding that our customers are not just using their garage spaces for parking their cars in. Today, a garage can be anything from a gym to work-from-home office to a bedroom! As a result, we are getting more and more enquiries about converting garage doors into entrances, so we thought you would like to find out how to convert a garage door opening into an entrance.
In this case, a customer in Seaford required the existing steel up & over garage door to be replaced with a draft-proof, insulted and secure solution that would prevent the flooding water that comes during the winter months. Then she could rent out the space as a room.
Follow the pictures step-by-step below to see how to convert a garage door opening into an entrance.
Step 1: Existing garage door carefully removed and disposed of from site.
Step 2: A treated timber frame is cut to size and securely fixed to the side walls, lintel and floor.
You can see the waterproof membrane fitted at the bottom and the first part of the new uPVC door in place.
Step 3: More treated timber is installed for insulating and strength.
The new door is installed and hung, and adjusted to work correctly. The window frame is installed level with the glazed part of the door.
Step 4: Window fully installed and a letterbox hole created!
The waterproof breathable membrane started and the start of the uPVC hollow soffit cladding is fitted.
Step 5: A view from the inside
It shows the detail and work that goes into this sort of project.
Step 6: The inside is completed with ply lining and ventilation cover.
Prior to this any gaps in the stud work were insulated with wool.
The finished result is in the main image above.
