When considering replacing your garage door, one of the first tasks you will need to tackle is its measurements.
I cannot stress enough that this needs to be done very carefully – repeatedly ideally – to make sure you do not get it wrong and you end up with a door that just does not fit.
Measurement 1
Determine the size of the door you need by measuring the height and width of the opening – please do this in millimetres as these are the measurements garage door manufacturers work to.
Measurement 2
Measure the width of the areas to the left and right of the opening. We call this the ‘sideroom’. It needs to be determined in order to accommodate the spring system.
Measurement 3
Measure the area from the top of the garage door to the lowest point on the ceiling of the garage. This measurement influences the door type that can be installed. In some circumstances, specific hardware can help to alleviate any space restrictions.
Measurement 4
Measure the area between the back wall of the garage and the opening of the door. This area is known as the ‘backroom’ and determines the space available for certain door types.
