Do you do electric garage door openers? This is a question we get asked a lot.

The answer is always “yes!” In fact we are a company who can do anything that revolves around a garage door and that includes small building works.

This month, I want to consider what is on the market for automating a garage door. Firstly, we are in an age where what used to be luxury items are becoming part of our every day lives. Smart phones dominate and technology advances are made it seems daily. The garage door world is no exception. Over the coming months a selection of garage door manufacturers will be bringing online garage doors that can be opened electronically from a mobile phone app.

For the uninitiated, a garage door opens and closes in tracks of some description. This movement is assisted by springs. By attaching a motor on another track the door can be powered up and down by the press of a button. In 99% of cases this can be done to your garage door right now.

Of course some doors work better than others. A retractable door slides up and down much easier than a canopy door. Canopy doors, where part of the door is left protruding outside when it is open, can have a “bow arm” fitted to make automation possible.

These days most electric garage door openers run with a rubber belt which makes the automation very quiet and maintenance free compared to old chain drives. The motors are small, powerful and very quiet. If you have an existing automation that old then a new one will make a massive difference.

They are not as expensive as you may think. Our automations start at £350 depending on the type and the work required to do the installation.  We specialise in doing this sort of work so do get in touch if you are considering an electrically operated garage door.

Finally, once installed correctly the automation should work faultlessly for years. However we do get call outs all the time to problems with electric garage door openers. Quite often it is the garage door that is the problem and not the automation. Garage doors are like a car or a bike they need servicing once in a while!

Today operating a newly installed electric garage door opener couldn’t be easier. The fobs, or remote controls, are aesthetically pleasing to hold and look good. They also operate from a fair distance away, about 100m. The new Hormann  range look particularly good.

If your garage door is too heavy to open or the height of it is challenging to open or you just warm to drive up to your home, press a button and get into your garage easily then automation is for you.
