How do I make my garage door opening wider?
This is a question I get asked almost every day when I visit customers to discuss their garage doors openings. Cars these days are just getting bigger and bigger, so manoeuvring them into an opening size designed for 1970s and 1980s cars is now almost impossible. Even if it is possible to get the car in, the chances are you will shut your eyes and hope for the best as the metal arms and side reveals are just waiting to scratch your car!
Sometimes we can fit a new door and frame inside and behind the opening to gain about 150mm of width, but often this is still not enough.
Converting two single garage standard door openings into one
Several times a year, my team and I convert two single garage door openings into one big one. Look at the photos above as an example:
- We support the roof and remove the brickwork
- We then install a strong RSJ steel to support the roof.
- We carefully make good the remaining brickwork, walls and floor
- Then it’s time to fit the garage door of choice
This is usually a sectional or a roller door. The pictures show you all you need to know. And believe it or not, we usually do all this in one day!
